Keith Wille

Keith Wille, MD, MSPH is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he has been a longstanding member of the Pulmonary and Critical Care faculty since completing his fellowship training there. Dr. Wille’s clinical and academic work centers on critical care medicine, with particular expertise in mechanical circulatory support technologies, including ECMO and other advanced life support modalities. He has a strong interest in transplantation and the management of complex cardiorespiratory failure, particularly in patients requiring multidisciplinary, high-acuity care. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Wille has pursued advanced training in research and quality improvement, earning a Master of Science in Public Health in Clinical Epidemiology from the UAB School of Public Health in 2013 and a Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety (MSHQS) in 2021. He currently serves as Medical Director of the UAB Adult ECMO and Advanced Lung Diseases Programs and plays a key leadership role in advancing mechanical circulatory support therapies. He is actively involved in national and international committee work focused on mechanical circulatory support and critical care, including the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, American College of Chest Physicians, and American Thoracic Society, contributing to guideline development, education, and collaborative initiatives that shape practice in these fields. He has contributed to several research consortiums, including the Lung Transplant Outcomes Group (LTOG) and the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium, supporting collaborative research in critical illness and advanced cardiorespiratory disease. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in critical care, mechanical circulatory support, and transplantation, reflecting his commitment to advancing both clinical practice and research.
